Oxford Rye Spirit is the product of Oxford Artisan Distillery and Master Distiller Cory Mason. They claim its pure rye spirit - not a whisky but a “taste of great whiskies to come.”

And that’s big talk. Mason drew his inspiration from American Rye Whiskey but uses local certified organic heritage rye that nods to its American cousin but has a very different profile. Their limited edition first and second batches of Oxford Rye Whisky have gone down a storm with a third batch, rested in American Oak and then fully matured in Moscatel de Setúbal wine casks, is out now.

Coming from such a strong family tree, Oxford Rye falls a little farther from the tree. It’s a pale amber, subtle taste of summer that is just as fleeting as the sun on an August Bank Holiday weekend.

Give A Dram-o-meter Score:

Stats: ABV 40% 70CL

Nose: Strong rye, oak, burnt chocolate and green apples.

Taste: It delivers everything it promises. It bounces around the pallet, gently warming and well rounded. Woody flavour, with hints of vanilla and gentle nutmeg.

Finish: Barely there finish with an Alcoholic tannin aftertaste.

Do we give a dram? Not really but will be watching for what it turns into.

Score: 2/5
